Great Blue Heron’s hair raising moment.

Thanks to Krista and WordPress for their Weekly Photo Challenge: Summer Lovin’. I love slipping the kayak into a natural-cover hide in a secluded cove and waiting for wildlife to arrive. On hot summer days, this Great Blue Heron often swoops down from the canopy and preens for hours on the half-submerged logs. When the wind is perfect,I’m able to stay with him for a long time, hidden from view, camera in hand. The peace there is profound.

  Hi Eileen – Thanks for the lovely compliment, I’m glad you like this photo. It was a little breezy then, but the heron had just finished scratching the underside of his chin. When they do that with those long, deadly talons, they very often erect their cap feathers. It seems to be an almost automatic thing. Frankly, if anyone scratched under my chin with toe claws like that, it would be hair-raising for me, too!
