Down the Rabbit Hole – Ailsa’s Through Theme and Weekly Photo Challenge: Patterns

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

Egret in profile.

Egret looks into entrance of pipe.

Egret looks inside.

“Hmmm,” said Egret to nobody in particular. “The book says that the rabbit-hole goes straight like a tunnel… This looks like a tunnel to me. Could this be that famous rabbit-hole, I wonder?”

Egret investigates another pipe entrance.

Egret investigates another tunnel.

“Or, maybe this tunnel here is the real rabbit-hole?” muttered Egret. “Looks like it goes straight, too, but it’s too dark in there to see if it dips suddenly down. What I wouldn’t give for a lantern right about now.”

Curious egret peers into pipe entrance.

Curious egret peers into entrance.

Egret was thinking to himself, “These tunnels are all starting to look the same to me,” until he came across this one. “Yikes, there are bars on this one. I wonder if the bars are intended to keep what’s inside in, or what’s outside out?”

“Maybe I should go ask Alice before I try to go through any of them” Egret sighed at last before launching into flight.

The End.

The weekly photo prompt is about patterns. There are many different types of patterns. There are visual patterns like those found in the great blue heron feathers I blogged about recently. There are musical patterns, where notes are grouped into chords and scales. There are also behavioral patterns, such as the egret’s curiosity about pipes. I have never seen an egret or heron that could resist looking into the opening of a pipe.

  1. What an elegant bird:-)

  2. and…Curiouser and curiouser!

  3. Lovely pictures to go with a nice story.

  4. Beautiful creature and great shots Babsje! We have one here right now I hope to see.
I don’t recall a Egret sipping tea at the table, but it would be nice for a bird to be included in Alice’s story.

    • Many thanks, Wayne. Glad you liked the Egret and I would love to see any photos you can make of the Egret there! I hope that Egret has brought along a few friends – your climate seems even more Egret-friendly than Massachusetts, where it is colder much longer. I like your idea of a bird at the table for tea. Maybe Alice could use an update? Best, Babsje
