Thank you. We started out with snow on the first day of Spring. Haven’t seen any herons yet, but perhaps any day now. Wishing you and yours a happy spring, too.
Grey herons sometimes start nest building already in January. Are great blue herons different from that?
Here, the earliest I have seen nesting behavior from Great Blue Herons has been in late March – but the weather has a lot to do with it. This winter was unseasonably warm (due to El Nino) and so in late February, I observed a Robin’s egg that had fallen to the ground. It really was far too soon for tender eggs. I am hoping to get out with binoculars this weekend and see what the Herons are up to! Best, Babsje
Interesting, how two rather closely related species apparently differ in this 🙂
Yes, I agree. I think perhaps the climate differences over the ages may come into play, just as they do here – where some birds breed earlier in the year in the southern regions than they do farther north, and some places can see more than one clutch per year, while others only one. Hi Gary – Many thanks for your kind words and keen observation. Interestingly, in more than a decade of watching the herons in that cove, early autumn last year was the first time that patch of shoreline erupted with yellow blossoms and tall reeds. There is something about the drought and flood activity that allows for unexpected propagation of those flowering weeds. I like when that happens. Glad you like this landscape. Best, Babsje
