Great Blue Heron by Falling Waters in Autumn – babsjeheron

“Lie still in a stream and breathe water. Climb to the top
of the highest tree until you come to the branch
where the blue heron sleeps. Eat poems for breakfast…”

Advice to Beginners (excerpt)

If I Had My Life to Live Over: I Would Pick More Daisies, Sandra Martz, ed.

Great Blue Herons and Red Tail Hawks often frequented this spot, fishing for the Trout, Bass, and Pickerel in the pools at the base of the falling water. Finding a Heron there when the Autumn colors were in full display was challenging and I spent many hours over 7 or 8 years hidden in my kayak across the channel in hopes of capturing a Great Blue with the striking autumn leaves. Good things come to she who waits.
.
.
The Herons have plenty of other fishing holes nearby. And so do the humans. Bass Fishing Tournaments take place frequently – some with big bucks in prize money.
.
.
I don’t think the Great Blue Heron in the photo sequences below paid a tournament entry fee, but he didn’t use any illegal bait to land that Largemouth Bass. I know the Bass he caught didn’t get properly weighed at take out what with having been gulped down mid-tourney, but I bet the size of that fish would have made some of the fishermen weep.

The bulge in the Heron’s elongated neck in the last frame above? The Largemouth Bass. The total elapsed time between landing the Bass and the final frame above was only two and a half minutes. I’m not sure how to estimate the weight of that Bass, but I’m pretty sure any good fisherman reading this can weigh in.

I think this Bass is a bigger fish in terms of weight than the large Pike shown below. What do you think?

When I returned belatedly to the dock after one Bass tournament, the boat departures had already begun, yet there were still more than 30 boats lined up on the shore.

Thanks to Cee for her Hunt for joy. I don’t know if this challenge is still on, but I really like the idea of searching for joy. The Herons bring joy.

  1. I’m always amazed at the size of fish I’ve seen the herons swallow Babsje. Your sequence is great! Loved the heron w the red leaves-perfect for an autumn challenge!!

    • Hi Tina. Thanks so much. And I’m with you in being surprised at the size of some of those fish the Herons catch and then swallow. I’m glad you liked the red leaves. It literally took me 7 or 8 years to catch both a Heron and the red color at the same time at the base of that small waterfall. Best, Babsje

  2. What a great story and pictures! Sometimes we photographers do get lucky but a lot of times it takes research and patience to get the shot. Great job!

    • Hi Dawn. Thanks so much for your kind comment. I’m happy that you appreciated this one. Thank you for once again hosting the annual Festival of Leaves. Best, Babsje

  3. That is a big fish, the heron looks very happy! I really enjoy this series. Great captures in photo!

    • Thanks so much, Amy. Yes that is a large Large Mouth Bass. I was shocked by the size of it. The Heron had to put it down at least 3 times and pick it back up because of the size. Lots of fun that day and I was happy that any of the photos came out. Thanks for creating your Colors or Autumn LAPC. Best, Babsje

  4. You certainly won the day with your excellent shots Babsje! I was surprised to hear you refer to “Pickerel”! Americans call them “Walleye” for some reason?
I still think that Pike was larger?

  5. This would have been amazing to watch! Glad you were there to see it!

    • Many thanks for your kind comment. Yes. It was incredible to see real-time. That’s the only time I ever saw a Heron capture a Large Mouth Bass. I think the Herons must know they are dangerously large for swallowing and so leave them alone? Glad you like it. Best, Babsje

  6. Wow, Babsje. What a great action sequence! Now we know why the heron’s neck is so long. I can’t imagine how it could swallow the whole fish otherwise!!

  7. Oh my…well captured!

  8. Beautiful, except that first photo, which is STUNNING!

    • Hi John. Many thanks for your generous comment. I’m very pleased that you like the first photo especially. It took me 7 or 8 years or patient watching that spot to capture that moment when the leaves were in color AND a Great Blue ventured by. Best, Babsje

  9. Fantastic shots 👏 The sequence of the heron with the bass is stunning 😃 Thanks for joining in & sharing some amazing pictures 😃

  10. Babsje, the autumn red behind the heron in that first photograph is gorgeous!

    • Hi Katherine. I’m so glad you like it. To be honest I have absolutely no idea whatsoever that plant or shrub is but I’m happy it’s right there. Many thanks for your kind compliment. Best, Babsje

  11. At least your GBH didn’t have to go to BassPro to shop for its fishing gear. I’d say the bass is probably around 4 lbs, which makes for a fine meal. 🙂

    • Hi David. Big smiles at your comment about Bass gear and thanks for weighing in on the Largemouth weight at around 4 pounds. Great Blues average around 4-5 pounds. No wonder that Heron had to stop so many times to put down the Bass. The Heron was carrying almost it’s own body weight! I certainly couldn’t do that. Thanks. Best, Babsje.

  12. Just wow! 😍 Shows how you’ve immersed yourself in this scene and become a part of it, bringing back messages of hope for the rest of us! 🙏

  13. Love the heron against the red, Babsje! Perfect Christmas card, maybe?
    Julie

  14. Great photos! What a huge fish to gulp. Wow.
